The Awesome Throne of God: A Glimpse Into Heaven’s Government

Have you ever wondered what the throne of God is really like? Revelation 4–5 gives us one of Scripture’s most breathtaking glimpses into the heavenly throne room. The Apostle John is caught up into heaven and immediately sees a throne—and One sitting upon it (Revelation 4:2). The throne is surrounded by dazzling glory, a rainbow like an emerald, lightning, thunder, seven lamps of fire, a crystal-like sea, and four magnificent living creatures. Around the throne are twenty-four elders who continually fall before God and proclaim: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come!” What a picture! Heaven is not out of control. Heaven has a throne. God reigns. Revelation 4 reminds us that God is the Creator and ultimate ruler of all things. His throne represents His authority, holiness, glory, and government over His creation. But then Revelation 5 takes us even deeper. John sees a scroll in the right hand of the One sitting on the throne. It is sealed with seven seals, and a great question is asked: Who is worthy to open the scroll? No one in heaven or earth is found worthy—until John sees Him: “A Lamb standing, as though it had been slain.” It is Jesus Christ. The Lamb comes and takes the scroll from the hand of the One on the throne. Heaven erupts in worship: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!” This is an extraordinary picture of the Kingdom of God. The Father remains sovereign upon the throne, and the victorious Lamb is worthy to receive and carry out God's purposes. The throne tells us God reigns. The Lamb tells us Christ has conquered. The scroll tells us God has a purpose for history and creation. And the worship of heaven tells us the entire universe will ultimately recognize the worthiness and authority of Christ. For us today, this is more than an amazing vision of heaven. It is a powerful reminder that God is still on the throne. No matter how chaotic the world may appear, history is not outside God's authority. As Kingdom people—and as Christian leaders in the marketplace—we are called to live and work from the reality that God's Kingdom is greater than every earthly kingdom, government, institution, business, or circumstance. The question is not whether God is in control. The throne has already answered that question. The question is whether we will recognize His authority, submit to His Kingdom, and faithfully represent the King wherever God has placed us. The throne is occupied. The Lamb is worthy. The Kingdom is coming in fullness. And God's purposes will ultimately prevail.
